I want to document this properly because by the time I had tested five different thesis editing and proofreading service providers I had accumulated enough specific experience to say something genuinely useful rather than just repeating the general advice that fills most posts on this topic. Five attempts sounds excessive and it was — but each one taught me something specific that the previous ones had not and the cumulative picture is worth sharing for anyone who wants to avoid the same journey.

The first two failures were about scope confusion — services that blurred the line between editing and proofreading in ways that produced outcomes satisfying neither need properly. Both delivered corrections that were too superficial for editing and too structurally interventionist for clean proofreading and the result in both cases was a document that felt neither tighter in argument nor cleaner in presentation. The lesson from both was that any thesis editing and proofreading service worth considering needs to be explicit about what their service includes and excludes at a practical level before you commit anything and that getting a vague answer to that question is itself useful information about how clearly they understand their own service.
